Not the final text, but this is roughly what I had in mind when planning the composition.

I usually paint a small colour study for each piece, sometimes more than one if I'm not sure about the overall mood. Here I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted. The top one is a sketch for a previous piece :)

I usually do a general value pass on top of the pencil drawing to help me keep the values right later on.
